lost a key fob for my 2014 sportage can i repurpose one from a 2016?

Our 2014 Kia Sportage recently lost one of its two key fobs, and we were shocked to get a replacement quote of over $1,000, which was way more than we expected. My brother still has the original key fob from his 2016 model, which has been junked. Is there any chance that fob can be reprogrammed to work with my 2014 model, or do you think the systems are just too different?

Yeah, fobs from the dealership can cost an arm and a leg. Your borther's fob might work, but it might not. It's the same gen, but I think there are differences between trim levels. You could check with the part number and see if they're a match. Not sure if the dealer will accept to reprogram, so you'll need to look for a shp that has the tools, but even then there are no guarantees. Have you looked at some aftermarket fobs?

$1,000?? that's steep. Yeah, i think there's a chance that it will work. However, I think professional programming by a dealership or a good automotive locksmith is needed. They will use tools to link the used fob to your car's system. It'll be much cheaper than a brand new one!
